For sim racing, the system requirements depend heavily on the simulation you want to play (e.g., iRacing, Assetto Corsa Competizione, rFactor 2, Automobilista 2) and the graphics quality and resolution you want to drive in. Generally speaking, simulation games are often more resource-intensive than arcade racers because, in addition to graphics, they also involve complex physics calculations and numerous background processes.
A powerful processor is therefore essential – modern multi-core CPUs such as a current Intel Core i5/i7 or AMD Ryzen 5/7 ensure smooth calculations and stable frame rates. The graphics card is equally crucial, as highly detailed vehicle and track models, as well as effects such as weather or night driving, demand a lot of power. A mid-range GPU is often sufficient for Full HD resolution, while a high-end model is necessary for WQHD, 4K, or VR.
Additionally, sufficient RAM is essential – at least 16 GB is recommended these days, as many Sims benefit greatly from RAM during long races or multiplayer. A fast SSD noticeably reduces loading times, which is especially useful when switching tracks or vehicles.
Beyond the PC hardware, peripherals also play a major role: A steering wheel with force feedback (e.g., from Logitech, Thrustmaster, or Fanatec) increases immersion enormously and is practically a must for serious sim racing. Depending on your requirements, pedals with load cells, shifters, or even motion rigs can be added. For the screen, at least a monitor with a high refresh rate is recommended; many sim racers also rely on triple-screen setups or VR headsets for a particularly realistic driving experience.
In short: A solid gaming PC with mid-range hardware is sufficient for beginners, but if you want to take advantage of the full range of graphics, VR, or large multi-monitor setups, you need a correspondingly powerful system.
